Department of Home Affairs Releases 2018 Skilled Occupation List


This week the Department of Home Affairs (DOHA) released an outcome of a biannual review of the Short Term Skilled Occupations List conducted by the Department of Employment.


This review entails addition of certain occupations to the lists of eligible skilled occupations; movement between the Medium and Long-term Strategic Skills List (MLTSSL) and the Short-term Skilled Occupation List (STSOL) for particular visa programs; or removal from the lists of eligible skilled occupations.


The following occupations were added to the STSOL:


  • Property Manager

  • Psychotherapist

  • Real Estate Representative


The following occupations were moved from STSOL to MLTSSL:


  • Horse Breeder

  • Management Consultant


The following occupations were removed altogether:


  • Building Associate

  • Hair or Beauty Salon Manager


A number of occupations had caveats added or amended:


  • Accommodation and Hospitality Managers nec - New caveat requires position to be in the regional area

  • Management Accountant – New caveat includes size of the business, employee numbers and business turnover

  • Massage Therapist – Amended caveat namely wording of the caveat amended to clarify definition of the role

  • Recruitment Consultant – Amended caveat including the minimum base salary being raised to $90,000 p.a.

  • Supply and Distribution Manager – Amended caveat clarifying the role of international trade obligations

  • Taxation Accountant – Amended caveat expended to include size of the business


The next update is expected in March 2018 in line with introduction of the TSS visa.
