Increased age eligibility for Canadian Working Holiday Makers



The Government has announced an increase of age eligibility for Canadian passport holders to participate in the working holiday program from 1 November 2018. The age eligibility will increase to 35.


The Australian Chamber of Tourism states that Working holiday makers spend approximately two and a half times more than they earn, and create over 25,000 job in the Australian economy.


The other eligibility requirements to be for the working holiday visa (Subclass 417) include:


  • have not previously entered Australia on a Work and Holiday (Temporary) visa (subclass 462)

  • hold a valid passport from a country involved in the Working Holiday Program with Australia

  • are a genuine visitor who wants to have a holiday in Australia

  • have enough money to support yourself on a working holiday (about AUD 5000)

  • have enough money to buy a return or onward travel ticket at the end of your stay

  • will not be accompanied by dependent children at any time during your stay.


As yet there has not been a change in the age requirement for other countries participating in the working holiday program. Other countries that participate in the working holiday program include:


  • Belgium

  • Republic of Cyprus

  • Denmark

  • Estonia

  • Finland

  • France

  • Germany

  • Hong Kong Special Administrative Region of the People's Republic of China (including British National Overseas passport holders)

  • Republic of Ireland

  • Italy

  • Japan

  • Republic of Korea

  • Malta

  • Netherlands

  • Norway

  • Sweden

  • Taiwan

  • United Kingdom
