For many professionals, Australian citizenship feels just out of reach, not because they are not committed to Australia, but because their work takes them overseas.

If you are a researcher, academic, or religious leader, frequent travel is often part of your role. But under the standard citizenship rules, time spent outside Australia can delay or even prevent your application.

This has been a real concern for many highly skilled individuals. Now, there is an important update that may change your pathway.

What’s new in 2026?  The Australian Citizenship (Special Residence Requirement) Amendment (Measures No. 1) Instrument 2026 introduces more flexibility for certain professions.

Here’s what you need to know:

Academics: If you hold a PhD and work at an Australian university, your research may now count, even if it involves time overseas

Ministers of Religion: Senior religious leaders now have a clearer pathway under the Special Residence Requirement

The key benefit: Time spent overseas for eligible work may still count toward your citizenship residency requirements

How does this work?

Standard rule (before this change)

Most applicants must:

  • Live in Australia for a required period

  • Spend no more than 12 months outside Australia in 4 years

  • Spend no more than 90 days outside Australia in the last 12 months

For many professionals, this was difficult to maintain.

Do you qualify?

You may be eligible under these changes if:

  • You hold a PhD and work for an Australian university

  • Your work contributes to Australia’s interests

  • You travel overseas as part of your role

  • You are a senior religious leader with organisational responsibilities

If this sounds like your situation, it is worth assessing your eligibility properly.

Why this matters more than it seems:

Meeting the criteria is only one part of the process. Citizenship under the Special Residence Requirement is not automatic, and outcomes often depend on how your work is presented, the strength of your supporting evidence, and whether your contribution to Australia is clearly explained

At SCA Connect, we assist with:

  • Assessing whether your work fits within the SRR framework

  • Preparing clear and well-structured applications

  • Presenting evidence in a way that supports your case

Our focus is not just eligibility, but how your application is positioned
