Increased English Language Requirements (Test Scores) for Temporary Graduate Visas


Temporary Graduate Visa

The Australian Government has made changes to English Language Requirements for Student and Temporary Graduate visas. The change applies to all student and temporary visa applications lodged on or after 23 March 2024.


Temporary Graduate visa (TGV)


  • The minimum score required for a TGV from IELTS test score increases from 6.0 to 6.5 (or equivalent), with a minimum score of 5.5 for each component of the test (reading, writing, speaking and listening).

  • The Cambridge English: Advanced test (CAE) requires an overall band score of at least 176 and a score of at least 162 for each test component.

  • The Occupation English Test (OET) requires a score of at least B for each test component.

  • The Pearson Test of English Academic (PTE) requires an overall band score of at least 57 and then a score for each component of listening, 43, reading, 48, speaking, 42 and writing, 51.

  • TOEFL iBT ( taken before 25 July 2023) requires an overall score of at least 83, and then a score in each component of listening, 7, reading, 8, speaking, 16 and writing, 18.


Temporary Graduate Visa Applicants  now need to provide evidence that they have completed an English Language test within 1 year immediately before the date of the visa application.
