The Jobs and Skills Australia 2025 Occupation Shortage List (OSL) has been released, with the findings reporting a slight easing in labour market pressures with 29% of occupations (293 out of 1,022 assessed) now in national shortage, down from previous years. JSA findings still showed shortages persist in critical sectors, with their findings reporting the following:
Nearly half of trade roles and two in five professional occupations remain in shortage, particularly within health, education, and construction industries.
Conversely, 69 occupations that were in shortage in 2024 are no longer considered in shortage for 2025. Among these, 31 belong to the Professionals major group, notably within business, finance, engineering, and ICT roles.
Just over a quarter of occupations (26% or 264) experienced shortages in both 2024 and 2025. Almost half of these are Professionals, many within health education, engineering and science fields and approximately 38% are Technicians and Trade Workers.
Regional labour markets remain under greater strain, with 21 occupations in shortage outside capital cities only.
The Jobs and Skills Australia (JSA) Occupation Shortage List (OSL) plays a critical role in shaping the Skilled Occupation Lists (SOL) that underpin Australia's skilled migration program.
There is currently no clear indication from the Government regarding when it will review the skilled occupation lists in effect for skilled migration, following the release of the Jobs and Skills Australia (JSA) reports.
