A significant procedural change to the Subclass 407 (Training) visa process will take effect on 11 March 2026. From this date, the Department of Home Affairs will apply updated validity requirements to all new visa applications lodged on or after 11 March 2026.

To lodge a valid Subclass 407 visa application on or after this date, the following conditions must be met:

1. An approved temporary activities sponsor must be in place, and

2. If the sponsor is not a Commonwealth agency, the applicant must also have a current, approved nomination for a program of occupational training.

Understanding the Change

Previously, visa applicants could lodge a Subclass 407 application while a sponsorship or nomination was still being processed, provided those approvals were obtained before a decision was made. Under the new arrangements, both sponsorship and nomination ( if not a commonwealth sponsor) must now be approved at the time of lodgement  of the visa application. for the visa application to be considered valid.

This change has significant implications for visa applicants in Australia who may be approaching the expiry of their current visa.
