Departing Australia Superannuation Payment (DASP)

For temporary work visa holders preparing to depart Australia on expiry of their visa, a common questions is “how do I claim my superannuation back?”.

Employers are required to pay compulsory superannuation contribution equivalent to at least 9.5% of the employee’s ordinary earnings. Employees are entitled to receive superannuation from their employer if they are over 18 years old and paid $450 or more (before tax) in a month, irrespective of the employee’s Australian residency status (temporary or permanent) and work arrangement (casual, part time or full time).

Once temporary visa holders have permanently departed Australia, they can apply to claim their superannuation as a Departing Australia Superannuation Payment (DASP), with the following conditions:

  • you accumulated superannuation while working in Australia on a temporary resident visa issued under the Migration Act 1958 (excluding Subclasses 405 and 410);

  • your visa has ceased to be in effect (for example, it has expired or been cancelled);

  • you have left Australia;

  • you are not an Australian or New Zealand citizen, or a permanent resident of Australia.

The DASP application can be made online or by paper and it will generally be paid within 28 days of receipt of the completed application. DASP is subject to a final DASP Tax.
