Most people become citizens by conferral, after a period as a permanent resident, though other pathways exist including citizenship by descent. For citizenship by conferral, you'll generally need to meet the residence requirement, have been a lawful resident and permanent resident for the required period, satisfy character requirements, and, depending on your age, pass the citizenship test and demonstrate an adequate knowledge of English and of your responsibilities and privileges as a citizen. There are some considerations for Ministerial Discretion and Special Residence requirements are available for those that do not meet the residency requirement.
