Resident Return Visa (Subclass 155)

The Resident Return visa (subclass 155) lets existing Australian permanent residents — and some former permanent residents and citizens — keep their ability to travel to and from Australia as permanent residents. Permanent residence itself doesn't expire if based in Australia, but the travel facility attached to it does, and once it lapses you can't re-enter as a permanent resident without a visa like the 155. Eligibility usually depends on how much time you've spent in Australia as a permanent resident in the relevant period. If you've been in Australia for at least two of the past five years, meeting the requirement is generally straightforward; if you haven't, you may still qualify by demonstrating substantial ties of benefit to Australia, and that's where careful evidence matters.
